Improve Cricket Pitch Standards


The head curator of International Cricket Council’s Global Cricket Academy visited Pakistan last days. He came to head a seminar organized on the art of preparing cricket pitches. This academy is based at Dubai Sports City. The academy is fully concentrating on the development of games.

The company is also providing educational courses by keeping involve different cricket playing countries so that the best experience and best practice could be shared among them. Dubai Sports City is comprised of seven sport academies. The ICC’s Global Cricket Academy is one of them. Other academies are relating to the sports of football, rugby, hockey, golf, tennis and swimming.

Tony Hemming, who is the head curator of the ICC Global Cricket Academy, said that the ICC Global Cricket Academy is having its focal point on the improvement of all areas of the cricket game. As this could be result oriented only if good participation is made; therefore he said that 30 ground staff from Pakistan is invited to attend this seminar and discuss the art of preparing a pitch.

The topics discussed in the seminar were about the construction, preparation and measurement of pitch performance. However, the seminar doesn’t remain limited to these topics; Hemming also passed his views and suggestions on environmental issues of the cricket game. He also talked about planning for test matches and good record keeping.

The audience of the seminar was also entertained with the multimedia presentation on the construction of Dubai Sports City’s 25,000-seater cricket stadium. They were given detailed information about the shifting of soil from Pakistan to Dubai and step by step process of the preparation of pitch. Hemming in his address stressed on the development of young curators besides cricketers for future cricket.

He said that these curators with their scientific knowledge work with experienced curators and would be able to produce favorable and supportive pitches for good cricket game in Sub-continent area. ICC’ Global Cricket Academy’s General Manager Marc Archer also attended the meeting.

In his speech he talked about the main objectives of this academy. He said;

“Part of our role at the ICC’s Global Cricket Academy is to ensure that we share good practice across all of the cricket-playing nations and we are perfectly placed to facilitate these hugely productive meetings”
